ACTUALLY NEED

THE SPACE TEENS

WHY THIS

EXISTS

I came to teaching sideways. I went to Ohio State for criminology — I wanted to be a forensic scientist, raised on Law & Order. Then I took one African-American studies course and it rerouted my whole life. I realized I could use my voice to humanize the Black experience, and that the classroom was the stage I'd been looking for.

I can count the Black educators who taught me on one hand. Representation matters — and every kid is better for real cultural exchange with an adult who actually sees them.

My first years teaching, I held on too tight. I mistook control for management, and all it built was walls. A mentor finally told me to go watch my students where they came alive — at their games, their shows, in the hallway. So I did. I listened to how they talked, what they played, what they cared about. And I started teaching in that language. Learning got rich the second I stopped translating my world for them and started translating their world into the work.

That shift has a name now — Hip Hop Based Education. Back then it was just me, finally listening.

WHAT WE

BELIEVE

We don't think teens are broken. We don't think they're empty cups to fill or problems to manage. They're thinkers, artists, builders — survivors and thrivers — walking around with more genius than the world makes room for. Our job isn't to fix them. It's to pull the genius out while they figure out who they are.

WHERE WE’RE

GOING

Over the next three years, T.E.M. will expand through Leadership and Service Retreats, Alternative Spring Break opportunities, and year-round service initiatives.

We will scale our teen internship program and scholarship access while cultivating donors and board-led grant efforts.

MANNIKKA

How It Works

The turntable.

We run on Hip Hop Based Education. It's our actual pedagogy, with decades of research behind it. It's simple: youth culture is the way in.

You
The record
No two alike — even in the same genre, every track plays different. We don't spin you like everyone else.
Youth Culture
The power switch
None of it works until we turn it on — until we start with what you're already into. Your music, your obsessions, your language.
The Method
The tonearm
The thing that actually makes the work touch you: real mentorship, a real project, weekly reps that keep you moving.

We're not taking requests and playing bangers on the fly. It's skilled. There's a plan running under the looseness. It's the difference between a studio and a hangout. It's an intentional methodology.

OUR PEOPLE

BUILT BY

EDUCATORS.

TEENS.

MADE FOR

T.E.M. Studio was founded on a simple, radical belief: that teenagers are not problems to be managed - they are people to be heard. Our founder launched T.E.M. in December 2024 after years working in education, youth development, and community organizing.

What started as a vision for a third space - somewhere between school and home, between structured and free, between finished and becoming - grew into a full nonprofit studio offering programming rooted in service, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

The work is personal. The work is for every teen.
